Understanding Mass Media

I was sleepless that night so I decided to turn the radio on, a slow song was playing that maybe I will be asleep any minute, but I was wrong, after a couple of songs I still can’t sleep. After some attempts of closing my eyes it still opens. So I decided to rise and have some snacks. When I went to the kitchen, I heard a neighbor shouting, I mean singing “I wanna fuck you!!!” I think she is watching MTV. I check on my phone just to find out that people are reacting on one of the PBB housemates. For me, it was funny. I opened the television and watch the news, I saw Chris Benoit, a wrestler, already dead in his condo unit. The news said that the wrestler got over doze with steroids that led him to side effects to the point of killing his wife and child, and killing himself. My brother was awakened because of me, he asked me why I’m still awake, I said I can’t sleep, and then he said “ok, biogesic ha.” What biogesic? I asked. He said, it means ingat. He got it from John Lloyd’s commercial.

Media is something that influences us. It helps us in a lot of ways but it can destroy us in many things too. For a child to see different commercials, it implies different ideas to them. For a child to see different commercials, they think its good, especially those with music and special effects. I think a child, when watching a television, needs guidance from an elder. So when they grow up they know what to believe in all those things media is providing. For me, who is learning the language of media, I think I’m understanding what media really meant with what they release in television, newspapers, radio and any other media materials. I know media has bias so we should be careful on what advertisement to believe, all of them will be saying that what they have is the best, but we should test on what really is the best. All that entertains us is not free; we all pay for those advertisements or something. Understanding media is a slow process, so examine those media materials we have before settling on something that we think is the best.

Mass Media, for me the widest way of communication, it connects people who don’t know each other thru viewing the same show, reading the same article, listening to the same situation. And I believe that people are connected to each other through this mass media.
